Delhi dominates India’s top college list

5 Sep 2025: New Delhi – Delhi University colleges have swept all top five positions in the country’s college rankings released on Thursday. Hindu College kept its number one spot for the second year while Miranda House, Hansraj College, Kirori Mal College, and St Stephen’s College followed in that order.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework 2025 results show Delhi’s strong hold on higher education. Half of India’s top 50 colleges are in Delhi. Nearly one-third of the top 100 colleges are also from the national capital.

Big Jump for Delhi University

Delhi University itself climbed to fifth place among universities from sixth place last year. This is the best rank DU has ever achieved in this category. The university stayed at 15th position in the overall rankings.

DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh called this a landmark moment. “It reflects the dedication and collective effort of our faculty, students, staff, alumni, and stakeholders, and will inspire us to reach even greater heights in teaching, research, and service to society,” he said.

Success Stories from Top Colleges

Hindu College Principal Anju Srivastava said their success comes from new teaching methods. The college keeps updating what students learn to include the latest knowledge. This helps students think on their own.

Kirori Mal College made the biggest jump from ninth place to fourth place. Principal Dinesh Khattar said they focused more on research work. Teachers and students now work together on research projects that get published.

JNU and Jamia Rankings

Jawaharlal Nehru University kept its second place among universities. It also moved up from tenth to ninth in overall rankings. JNU has been the best public university for nine years in a row.

Jamia Millia Islamia slipped from third to fourth place among universities. But the university still performed well in new areas being measured.

The NIRF rankings started in 2015. They check colleges on teaching quality, research work, student success after graduation, and how inclusive they are.

Delhi’s strong performance shows the city remains India’s education hub with quality institutions leading the way.
