5 Sep 2025: New Delhi – Delhi residents are getting muddy water in their taps as the Yamuna River’s high water levels and debris are affecting the city’s water treatment plants. The Delhi Jal Board says two major water plants near the river are struggling to clean the dirty water, causing problems for people living in north, central and New Delhi areas.
The Wazirabad and Chandrawal water treatment plants provide 20 percent of Delhi’s water supply. These plants are working at reduced capacity because the river water is extremely muddy. The water coming from the river has 7,000 NTU of dirt particles, while normal water has only 30-40 NTU. Clean drinking water should have less than 2 NTU.
Residents Report Muddy Water in Taps
People across Delhi are complaining about dirty water coming from their taps. Alka Batra from Bhagwan Das Road said the water is so muddy that even filters cannot clean it. When she fills a bucket, a thick layer of mud settles at the bottom.
“The water is so muddy that even filters are not working. It seems that water is not being treated at all,” Batra said.
Areas like Mandi House, Tilak Marg, Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk have reported similar problems. Some areas received no water supply at all on Thursday.
Multiple Areas Affected
The water crisis has spread to many parts of Delhi. Model Town residents say their water smells bad and looks dirty. People in Kalkaji, Sukhdev Vihar, Hari Nagar and Patel Nagar also reported poor water supply.
Delhi Jal Board officials said the rising river water has reached near the treatment plants but has not flooded them like in 2023. The main problem is the debris and silt coming from upstream areas.
Residents are worried this dirty water will cause diseases. Many have stopped using tap water completely. The Delhi Jal Board has not issued any warning to residents about the water problem.
