5 Sep 2025: New Delhi – Justice Shalinder Kaur retired from the Delhi High Court on Thursday after serving the court with dedication. During her farewell ceremony, she shared an important message with young lawyers about their future in law.
Justice Kaur told young lawyers to treat law as more than just a job. She asked them to see it as their life’s purpose and to work hard with honesty.
Judge’s Advice to Young Lawyers
Speaking at the full court reference meeting, Justice Kaur gave simple but powerful advice. She told young lawyers to prepare well for their cases and not be afraid when they are ready. She said the legal profession can be tough, but staying honest makes it worth it.
“To the young members, I would urge you to pursue law, not merely as a career, but as a calling. Prepare with sincerity. Be fearless when prepared. The road may test you at times, but if you stay true to these values, the journey will be worthwhile,” she said.
Court Leaders Praise Her Work
Delhi Chief Justice DK Upadhyay praised Justice Kaur’s work. He said people will remember her contributions for many years. Her judgments have helped many people and made a real difference in their lives.
N Hariharan, who leads the Delhi High Court Bar Association, said Justice Kaur always treated everyone fairly in her courtroom. She was never in a rush and never harsh with anyone.
Her Journey and Important Cases
Justice Kaur joined the Delhi High Court on October 20, 2023. Before that, she retired from the Delhi higher judicial service on September 30. The Supreme Court recommended her for this position because of her good work and honest character.
During her time at the court, she made several important decisions. Just two days before retiring, she denied bail to nine people accused in the Delhi riots conspiracy case. In July, she ruled that army personnel should get disability pension even if they get hurt at a peace station. She also upheld a decision against activist Medha Patkar in a defamation case.
Justice Kaur’s last working day was September 4, though her official retirement date was September 7. Her work at the Delhi High Court has set an example for future judges and lawyers to follow.
