5 Sep 2025: New Delhi, – Volunteers and local residents rescued more than 100 animals including dogs, cattle and even mice from the flooded Yamuna riverbanks in Delhi yesterday. The rescue teams worked through chest-deep water near Mayur Vihar Phase-1 area to save animals trapped by the rising river.
A group of 30 to 40 people gathered opposite Mayur Vihar Phase-1 on Thursday morning to help stranded animals. They used two rescue boats to search for dogs and cattle stuck in the flooded areas. By evening, the volunteers had saved nearly 80 dogs, 15 buffaloes, four cows, two calves and even two mice.
Community Comes Together for Animal Rescue
The rescue work started when local people saw animals trapped on rooftops and surrounded by floodwater. Yogesh Khabrani, a 35-year-old Mayur Vihar resident, said people had been working since Wednesday morning. They brought food and medicines using their own money.
At first, volunteers walked through the water on foot. Later, local MLA Ravinder Singh Negi arranged for rescue boats to help save the animals. Every time a boat brought back an animal, people clapped and cheered. The rescued animals got food, water and medical care right away.
Animal Welfare Groups Join Efforts
Friendicoes-SECA, one of Delhi’s oldest animal welfare groups, joined the rescue work. A volunteer from the group said they were ready for the floods and came to help in Mayur Vihar while also working in Noida and Ghaziabad.
The rescue teams made smart decisions about the animals. Rudra, a volunteer, explained they kept rescued dogs near their original areas. “We are keeping them nearby so when the waters recede, they can return to their areas,” he said.
Rescue Work to Continue
As night came, about 50 to 60 animals were still stuck in the water. The teams could not work in the dark because it was too dangerous. They left food for the trapped animals and planned to start again at 8 am on Friday morning.
The rescue effort showed how people can work together during hard times. Citizens and animal groups joined hands to save helpless animals from the flood.
