The famous Sunday book market in Daryaganj, Delhi, is still going strong after many years. Authors Sohail Hashmi and Kanupriya Dhingra led a special walk to show people the history of this beloved market.
Old memories and rare books
Sohail Hashmi showed a very old book he bought long ago for just 25 paise. He said the market used to have many rare books that students could buy cheaply. The market started in 1961 and moved to a new place called Mahila Haat in 2019. People loved to walk around on Sundays and look at all the books. They often ended up buying some.
Growth and changes over time
The market began with about 50 to 60 book sellers. Now it has grown to about 230 sellers. It started as a small part of a waste market but became very important for students. People can find all kinds of books here, from old and rare ones to study guides. Kamar Syed, who leads the market group, says more people come now, but the feeling is a bit different. Pulling out a copy of “The History of Shah Alam” at the iconic Sunday book market in Daryaganj’s Mahila Haat, author and city chronicler Sohail Hashmi recalled the early days of the market as he, along with author Kanupriya Dhingra, led a heritage walk across lanes of Netaji Subhash Marg…
Ye gyan ka bazaar hai (This is the market of knowledge). This market has its own contribution to education over generations.
