WASHINGTON, May 23 – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has revoked Harvard University’s authority to sponsor international student visas, citing national security concerns and failure to comply with federal oversight under the Student Exchange and Visitor Program (SEVP). DHS Secretary Kristi Noem accused Harvard of refusing document requests, promoting pro-Hamas sentiments, and enforcing discriminatory diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. Harvard called the decision unlawful and retaliatory, asserting it threatens the academic futures of 6,000+ foreign students, including several hundred from India. The dispute stems from the university’s opposition to federal demands targeting pro-Palestinian activism and DEI initiatives. Harvard has filed a lawsuit, seeking immediate legal relief. The decision marks a deepening clash between the Trump administration and elite academia.
