4 Sep 2025 Chandigarh: Haryana Asks to Reduce Water Supply Amid Heavy Rains, Punjab Faces Floods. The Haryana government has requested a cut of 2,500 cusecs in its canal water supply from Punjab due to heavy rainfall in the region. The request comes at a time when Punjab is battling severe floods across all 23 districts, affecting more than 1,400 villages and displacing over 3.54 lakh people.
Chief Engineer of Haryana Irrigation Department sent a letter to the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) on August 29, stating that continuous rainfall has reduced their need for irrigation and drinking water. The BBMB, which manages water distribution between states, has forwarded this request to the Punjab government.
Current Water Distribution • Punjab receives 5,512 million acre feet • Haryana gets 2,987 million acre feet • Rajasthan receives 3,398 million acre feet
Punjab officials have expressed concern over the timing of this request. Water Resources Minister Barinder Goyal called it ironic that Haryana is seeking reduced water flow while Punjab battles floods. The water levels in the Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej rivers remain dangerously high.
Punjab Revenue Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian said, “Our government machinery is working round the clock on rescue and relief operations across the flood-affected districts.”
This development adds another chapter to the decades-old water dispute between the two states. Earlier this year, Haryana had demanded extra water, which led to protests and legal battles.
The BBMB has not yet responded to Haryana’s latest request. Meanwhile, rescue operations continue in Punjab’s flood-affected areas as authorities work to help displaced residents.
