Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced plans to install railings along the canal. She visited the families of the drowned boys and promised 5 lakh rupees to each family. Gupta asked officials to make canals and other places safer to stop such accidents. The government will now look after 20 km of the canal from Bawana to Inderlok. Importance of Munak Canal
Munak Canal is very important for Delhi's water supply. It brings water from Yamuna River to the city. The canal has had problems like damage, theft, and dirty water. In the past two years, the canal broke three times. Delhi Jal Board said up to 30% of water was being lost. The canal gives about 37% of Delhi's daily water needs.
The Delhi government has taken over the maintenance of the Munak Canal which was earlier with the Haryana government. We will install railing on either side and make it safe so that such incidents are not repeated.
