4 Sep 2025: Chennai – IIT Madras has once again secured the number one position in engineering education for the tenth straight year in the National Institutional Rankings Framework 2025. The institute also topped the overall category for the seventh year running and won first place in two new categories – Innovation and Sustainable Development Goals.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced the rankings in New Delhi today. IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti received the award along with Prof. R. Sarathi and Prof. Rajnish Kumar from the institute.
Team Effort Behind Success
Prof. Kamakoti credited the achievement to teamwork. He thanked students, teachers, alumni and staff members for their hard work.
“Being a topper consistently is a result of a collective, cohesive and focused team effort. Together, we pledge to put in our best efforts towards Viksit Bharat@2047,” Prof. Kamakoti said.
The institute has maintained its top position in engineering since the NIRF Rankings started ten years ago. This year brought extra success with first place in Innovation category, improving from second position last year.
New Schools Drive Excellence
IIT Madras recently opened two new schools to boost its performance. The School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship aims to help students start technology companies. The School of Sustainability, started in October 2023, focuses on environmental solutions.
The institute has also made history by opening the first full IIT campus outside India. IITM Zanzibar now welcomes students from Africa, India, Middle East and other regions.
Government Recognition
The Government of India named IIT Madras as an Institution of Eminence in September 2019. This year, the institute started admitting students through a new Fine Arts and Cultural Excellence program.
Education Minister Pradhan noted that the ranking system now covers 17 categories, up from 16 last year. He said strong rankings help improve education quality and build the nation.
The NIRF Rankings evaluate colleges based on teaching, research, graduation rates, student diversity and public perception.
