4 Sep 2025: New Delhi, December 27 – IIT Madras has won the top position in India’s best colleges list for the seventh year in a row. The Ministry of Education announced the NIRF rankings on Thursday, showing which colleges and universities are performing best in the country.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan shared the results that show IIT Madras leading all institutions. Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru came second in the overall rankings.
Top Universities Show Strong Performance
In the university category, IISc Bengaluru took first place. Jawaharlal Nehru University got the second position. Manipal Academy of Higher Education came third, while Jamia Millia Islamia secured the fourth spot.
The rankings help students and parents choose the best colleges for higher education. These results are based on teaching quality, research work, and student success rates.
Delhi Colleges Dominate Top Positions
Hindu College from Delhi University topped the college rankings. Miranda House got second place, followed by Hans Raj College in third position. Kirori Mal College secured fourth place, while St Stephen’s College came fifth.
All these colleges are part of Delhi University and have shown excellent performance in education and student development.
Research and Open Learning Categories
IISc Bengaluru also won the top spot for research institutions. IIT Madras came second in research work. This shows both institutions are doing great work in creating new knowledge and technology.
For distance learning, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) got first position. Karnataka State Open University from Mysuru came second. These universities help lakhs of students who cannot attend regular classes.
“The NIRF rankings guide students in making informed choices about their education and future careers,” officials stated.
The rankings are released every year to help students pick the right college. The next ranking announcement will happen in 2025.
