IIT Madras secures top spot in NIRF Rankings 2025 for seventh year in a row

4 Sep 2025: New Delhi, January 16 – IIT Madras has won the top spot in India’s college rankings for the seventh year in a row. The Ministry of Education released the NIRF Rankings 2025 on Thursday, showing which colleges and universities are the best in the country.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras came first in the overall category. This means it beat all other colleges and universities in India to claim the number one position once again.

Top Universities and Colleges Announced

IISc Bengaluru got the first rank among universities. Jawaharlal Nehru University from New Delhi came second, and Manipal Academy of Higher Education took the third spot.

In the colleges category, Hindu College from Delhi kept its first position. Miranda House came second and Hansraj College got third place.

IIT Madras Leads Engineering Too

IIT Madras also topped the engineering category. IIT Delhi came second and IIT Bombay secured third position among engineering colleges.

For management studies, IIM Ahmedabad emerged as the best institute in the country. Jamia Hamdard from New Delhi topped the pharmacy category.

AIIMS New Delhi kept its position as India’s best medical college for another year.

How Rankings Are Decided

The government checks colleges on five main points. These include teaching quality, research work, student success after graduation, helping all types of students, and what people think about the college.

This year, the Ministry checked colleges in 17 different categories. These include engineering, management, medical, law, agriculture, and many more fields.

The NIRF ranking system started in 2015. The Education Ministry created it to help students and parents know which colleges are doing the best work in India.

These rankings help lakhs of students choose the right college for their future studies. The results show which institutes are maintaining high standards in education.
