DELHI, August 11, 2024 – Delhi heavy rain has continued for four days straight, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert for Sunday. This ongoing rain has exposed the city’s struggles with urban flooding and safety issues, particularly in areas that are more vulnerable.

Delhi Heavy Rain Intensity, Temperature Drops

Delhi’s Regional Meteorological Centre at Safdarjung reported 1.3 mm of rainfall by 5:30 PM on Saturday, marking the continuation of the wet spell. This persistent Delhi heavy rain has led to a significant temperature drop, with the maximum temperature recorded at 32.8°C, slightly below the seasonal average. The minimum temperature was 25.8°C, also lower than usual for this time of year.

The IMD’s weather forecast predicts continued rain on Sunday, with temperatures expected to range between a high of 32°C and a low of 26°C. Despite the heavy rain, Delhi’s air quality remains satisfactory, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 71 recorded on Saturday. Noida, part of the National Capital Region (NCR), reported an even better AQI of 53.

Drowning Incident Highlights Flood Risks Amid Delhi Heavy Rain

The relentless rainfall has brought tragedy along with cooler temperatures. On Friday evening, two 11th-grade students, both 17 years old, drowned in a waterlogged vacant plot near the Ranikhera Bus Depot in Prem Nagar. The victims, Mayank and Divyansh, were reportedly playing cricket when they fell into the water-filled area.

Ranjit Kumar, Mayank’s father and a Prem Nagar resident, told police that his son had been playing with friends around 6 PM. By 7 PM, Kumar received the devastating news of his son’s drowning. Local residents had already retrieved both Mayank and Divyansh from the water by the time authorities arrived. The boys were rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital but were declared dead upon arrival.

Divyansh’s father, Pramod Tomar, confirmed that his son was a student at a nearby government school and had also been playing cricket with friends when the incident occurred.

Long-Standing Waterlogging Issue in Prem Nagar

The tragedy has brought attention to a persistent problem in Prem Nagar. Residents report that the plot where the boys drowned has been waterlogged for the past three years, with water levels rising significantly during the rainy season. Despite multiple complaints to officials and local representatives, no action has been taken to address the issue.

“We’ve been raising this issue for years now,” said a local resident who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s heartbreaking that it took the loss of two young lives for people to take notice.”

This incident underscores the urgent need for better urban planning and drainage systems in Delhi, particularly in areas prone to waterlogging. It also raises questions about the responsibility of local authorities in addressing such long-standing hazards.
