The Union Cabinet has approved Phase-III of a plan to increase medical education seats in India. The plan aims to add 5,000 postgraduate and 5,023 undergraduate seats in government medical institutions by 2028-2029.
Details of the Expansion Plan
The plan will upgrade existing government medical colleges and hospitals. It has a total budget of 15,034.50 crore rupees. The central government will pay 10,303.20 crore rupees. State governments will pay 4,731.30 crore rupees. The plan will run from 2025 to 2029. It will help create more doctors in India. Current Medical Education Scenario
India now has 808 medical colleges. This is the highest number in any country. These colleges can take 123,700 students for MBBS courses. In the last 10 years, India added 69,352 new MBBS seats. This was a 127% increase. It also added 43,041 postgraduate seats. This was a 143% increase. But some areas in India still need more medical colleges.
This will strengthen the overall availability of doctors in the country.
