The Supreme Court refused to hear Medha Patkar's plea in a 25-year-old defamation case against Delhi LG Vinai Kumar Saxena. The court allowed Patkar to withdraw her appeal seeking to examine an extra witness in the case.

Court Urges Closure of Long-Running Case

The Supreme Court bench asked both sides to end the case. The judges said they already closed it on merits. They told the lawyers to move on. Patkar's lawyer worried Saxena might file a new case if this one ends. The court first noted Saxena's promise not to file more cases. But Saxena's lawyer said he needed to keep his legal options open.

Background of the Defamation Case

The case began in 2000 when Patkar filed it against Saxena over a newspaper article. Last month, the Supreme Court upheld Patkar's conviction in a 2001 defamation case filed by Saxena. That case was about a press release by Patkar's group. It said Saxena gave them a cheque that bounced. The Delhi High Court agreed Patkar's statements hurt Saxena's image. The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea by social activist Medha Patkar seeking permission to examine an additional witness in a 25-year-old defamation case against Delhi lieutenant governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.
