Tamil Nadu has a long history of trying to give rural students better chances in higher education. The state has made many changes to its reservation policies for government school students since 1996. These policies aim to help rural students get into professional courses.
Early Attempts at Rural Reservation
In 1996, the DMK government set up a committee to look at education standards. This led to a 15% reservation for rural students in professional courses. The AIADMK government raised this to 25% in 2001. But in 2002, the Madras High Court said this was not allowed. The state tried to fight this in the Supreme Court but did not win.
Recent Changes in Reservation Policy
In 2020, Tamil Nadu passed a law giving 7.5% reservation to government school students for medical courses. This was based on a report that said these students face many problems. In 2021, this reservation was extended to other courses like engineering and agriculture. The government said this would help students who are socially and educationally behind. In 2022, the Madras High Court said this new law was okay. The View From India Looking at World Affairs from the Indian perspective.
