Information about the Mars Sample

The rock sample is called Sapphire Canyon. It was collected in July 2024 from rocky areas near Neretva Vallis. This is a river valley that was made by water flowing into Jezero Crater long ago. Since landing on Mars in February 2021, Perseverance has collected 30 samples. It still has six empty tubes to fill. The rover also studies rocks it does not sample by using a special tool. It has other tools too, like a weather station and pieces of spacesuit material.
