NASA's Perseverance rover has found possible signs of ancient life on Mars. The rover collected a sample from an old dry riverbed in Jezero Crater that might have evidence of tiny life forms from long ago.
What the rover found
The rover took a sample from a rock called Cheyava Falls last year. Scientists named the sample Sapphire Canyon. It has things that could show life was once there. The sample has special chemicals that tiny life forms might have used for food. It also has spots that look like they could have been made by tiny living things. But scientists are not sure yet if it really means there was life.
Why this is important
This is the closest we have ever come to finding life on Mars. It helps us learn more about the planet. The rocks where the sample was found are younger than other rocks the rover has studied. This means Mars might have been a good place for life for longer than we thought. But scientists need to do more tests to be sure. They have to be very careful before saying they found proof of life on another planet.
This finding is the direct result of NASA's effort to strategically plan, develop, and execute a mission able to deliver exactly this type of science – the identification of a potential biosignature on Mars.
