The Karnataka government has named four new members to the upper house of the state legislature. Dr Arathi Krishna, vice-chairperson of the state NRI forum, is among those nominated for a full term.

New Members and Their Roles

Dr Arathi Krishna is seen as the high command candidate. She is also the AICC secretary. The other nominees are F.H. Jakkappanavar, journalist Shivakumar K, and Ramesh Babu. Babu, who heads the party communication wing, gets a one-year term. These additions will increase Congress MLCs to 37 in the Upper House. This matches the combined total of BJP and JD(S) members.

Impact on Legislative Process

The new members will help Congress pass bills more easily. In the last session, the party faced trouble when a bill was defeated in the Council. Now, even in a tie, Congress can win with support from A.H. Vishwanath. The nominations also protect against no-confidence votes. Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar called the Council the Thinkers Den.
