More Indian institutions in top list
The number of Indian institutions with top-cited researchers grew 12% to 1,495 in 2025. On average, each institution had 4.2 top scientists, up from 3.9 in 2024. Most top Indian researchers (91%) work in colleges and universities. Only 9% are from government research centers. Private companies do very little public research in India. Focus areas differ from global trends
Indian top researchers focus most on Applied Sciences (46%) and Natural Sciences (31%). Only 21% work on Health Sciences. This is different from global trends. Worldwide, 42% of top scientists work in Health Sciences. India has very few top researchers in areas like brain science, cancer, and public health. India also has a low share (1%) in Economics and Social Sciences research.
Sustained investments in research in focused areas, coupled with a strategic shift in focus on quality outcomes and impact, thereof and a more robust academia-government-research-industry connect, will enable India to achieve the goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
