The Indian government approved a plan to add 10,023 new medical college seats by 2028-29. This Rs 15,034.50 crore scheme will create 5,023 MBBS and 5,000 PG seats to improve healthcare access across India.
Current Status of Medical Education
India now has 808 medical colleges with 1,23,700 MBBS seats and 74,306 PG seats. This is a big increase from 2014. The government wants to improve the doctor-population ratio. Right now, there is about 1 doctor for every 1,300 people in modern medicine. This is less than what the WHO recommends. Most doctors work in cities, leaving rural areas with few doctors.
Challenges in Expanding Medical Education
The government plans to upgrade existing colleges and convert district hospitals into teaching centers. New rules allow experienced government doctors to become teachers. But there are worries about having enough good teachers and facilities for all the new students. The Indian Medical Association says just adding seats is not enough.
