Flooded Yamuna river wreaks havoc in Delhi; water enters relief camps, crematoriums

4 Sep 2025: New Delhi – The Yamuna River in Delhi is flowing above the danger mark and has flooded many areas in the city. The water level at the Old Railway Bridge reached 207.48 meters between 6 am and 7 am on Thursday morning.

The flood water has entered relief camps where people who left their homes are staying. It has also reached near the Delhi Secretariat building. Areas like Yamuna Bazar and Monastery Market are under water.

Thousands of People Moved to Safety

The Delhi government has moved 8,018 people to tents and 2,030 people to 13 permanent shelters. These people were living in low-lying areas near the river. The revenue department shared these numbers with the media.

Shop owners at Monastery Market started moving their goods early in the morning. They were worried the water level would rise more. One shop owner said hundreds of people are still stuck in colonies behind the market. Many remember similar floods that happened in 2023.

Cremation Grounds Stop Working

Nigambodh Ghat, Delhi’s oldest cremation ground, had to stop working after flood water entered on Wednesday at 3 pm. The Geeta Colony crematorium is also flooded with water about 10 feet deep.

“In 2023, water had entered the cremation ground, and today again it is filled with water. The damage is extensive as all the wood stored outside has been ruined. We are not receiving any help from the administration,” said Sanjay Sharma, head of Geeta Colony crematorium.

Metro Service Alert

The Delhi Metro said the road to Yamuna Bank Metro Station cannot be used because of flooding. But the station is still working and people can change trains there.

A part of a flyover on National Highway 44 near Alipur police station also broke down on Thursday after heavy rain in the city for many days.

The weather department says Delhi will have thunderstorms with rain on Thursday. Friday will have cloudy sky with moderate rain. The temperature will be between 21 degrees and 33 degrees Celsius.

The situation remains serious as water continues to flood more areas. Officials are working to help affected people.
