A government school in North Chennai faced flooding last December. This showed that students knew about floods from books but not how to handle real floods. It points to a big problem in how we teach about the environment in India.

Current Environmental Education Not Enough

Many schools in India teach about climate change. But this teaching often stops after exams. Students learn facts but not how to use them in real life. The National Education Policy 2020 talks about environmental awareness. But ecology is still not seen as very important in most schools. Students can finish school without learning about who suffers most from climate change.

New Ways to Teach Climate Resilience

Some places are trying new ways to teach about climate. In Kerala, there is a Flood Literacy Programme. Tamil Nadu has a Green Campus plan. Delhi has Eco-Clubs. These show what can happen when the government and people work together. The goal is to teach about the environment in all subjects. This includes Law, Economics, and Engineering. Students should learn how climate change affects different parts of life. The View From India Looking at World Affairs from the Indian perspective.
