IIT Dhanbad has removed the mandatory attendance rule for students. Starting from 2025-26, students can take exams without meeting attendance requirements. This is the first time any IIT has made such a change.
New Policy Details
The new rule applies to all students – UG, PG and PhD. Before this, students needed 75% attendance. Now they will not be punished for low attendance. The IIT Dhanbad senate approved this change on September 1. The senate is the highest academic body at IITs. The dean said this will give students more freedom to join clubs and learn new skills.

One student said the change has not affected her much as she attends classes regularly. Other IITs still have attendance rules. IIT Guwahati, Kharagpur, Delhi and Roorkee need 75% attendance. IIT Madras and Palakkad ask for 85%. BITS Pilani never had attendance rules, but now gives marks for class participation. The education minister supports relaxing attendance norms for top students.
