The National Medical Commission has approved 10,650 new MBBS seats for the 2024-25 academic year. This increase is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's plan to create 75,000 new medical seats over five years.

More Medical Colleges and Seats Added

The total number of medical colleges in India has gone up to 816 with 41 new ones added. The overall MBBS seat count will now be 1,37,600 for the 2024-25 academic year. This includes seats in special national institutes. For postgraduate courses, about 5,000 new seats are expected to be added. This will take the total PG seats to 67,000 across the country.

Changes in Medical Education

The NMC is working to make medical education better. They want to add clinical research to the main medical course. They are planning to work with the Indian Council of Medical Research to improve research in medical colleges. The NMC chief said this is the first time in recent years that all appeals against decisions were solved without going to court. The NMC will soon share a plan for the next academic year's schedule. Out of the 170 applications received for expanding undergraduate seats, a total of 10,650 MBBS seats have been approved, said NMC Chief Dr Abhijat Sheth.
