The National Education Opportunity Network (NEON) is bringing top university courses to poor high schools across America. Started in 2019, NEON has given over 40,000 students from 33 states a chance to take classes from 17 top colleges.

How NEON Works

NEON connects elite universities with poor schools. It helps students take online college classes while still in high school. NEON trains teachers to help with these classes. It also gets college students to mentor high schoolers. This helps poor students believe they can go to good colleges. NEON wants to reach 1 million students in 10 years. Success and Challenges

NEON says 80 percent of students pass their courses. A study found NEON students are twice as likely to go to four-year colleges. But the program needs more money to grow. It only has 32 full-time staff and made 7.5 million dollars last year. Some schools say it takes a lot of work to offer NEON courses. But many think it helps students a lot.
