About two lakh public school teachers in Karnataka started a caste census during the Dusshera school break. They have to fill a 60-item form about family, education and property for 150 houses in 15 days.

The extra work affects both students and teachers. Students results suffer when teachers are away for long. Teachers feel stressed about poor student performance. They can face punishment like no salary raise or transfer to far areas. Some teachers say the work is too much and hurts their mental health. They feel they cant say no to government work, even for health reasons.
