IISc Bangalore Tops Indian Universities in World Rankings

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has kept its spot as the top Indian university in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It is ranked in the 201-250 band. India now has the second-highest number of ranked universities globally, after the United States.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has kept its spot as the top Indian university in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. It is ranked in the 201-250 band. India now has the second-highest number of ranked universities globally, after the United States.

More Indian Universities Make the List

Many Indian schools are now on the world rankings list. The Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences in Chennai is ranked 351-400. Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi and Shoolini University in Himachal Pradesh are in the 401-500 group. Other schools like Banaras Hindu University and IIT Indore are in the 501-600 range. Over 15 Indian schools are in the 601-800 band, including Aligarh Muslim University and University of Delhi.

Global Rankings and Asian Performance

The University of Oxford is still the world's top university for the 10th year in a row. In Asia, Tsinghua University stays at 12th place. Peking University moved up to 13th place. The National University of Singapore remains at 17th. China has 13 universities in the top 200, with five in the top 40. Hong Kong now has six universities in the top 200, which is a new record for them.
