Delhi University to Monitor Faculty Performance, Review Panel Formation Triggers Dissent

DU forms 9-member committee to assess faculty performance, raising concerns over academic freedom.

NEW DELHI, May 24: Delhi University has constituted a nine-member committee to review faculty performance, aligning with the Centre’s June 2024 directive mandating quarterly evaluations. The move, approved during DU’s Executive Council meeting, empowers the university to recommend premature retirement for staff aged above 50 or with over 30 years of service, citing public interest. Inder Mohan Kapahi, a Chancellor-nominated Executive Council member, will chair the panel. While the administration calls it a step towards administrative efficiency, faculty members fear misuse and suppression of dissent. Critics, including Professor Mithuraj Dhusiya and INTUC Chairman Professor Pankaj Kumar Garg, argue that DU faculty do not fall under CCS rules and warn the policy could hurt academic morale. The committee’s recommendations will be reviewed in the upcoming Executive Council session
