The School of International Studies (SIS) at Jawaharlal Nehru University will turn 70 next month. It has trained many top leaders and helped India understand the world better since 1955.
How SIS Started and Grew
SIS began in 1955 when India was a new country. Leaders knew India needed smart people to deal with other countries. So they started this school to teach about the world. In 1970, SIS joined JNU. It taught about different parts of the world and trained people who later became ministers and diplomats. The school helped India think about big issues like nuclear weapons and peace.
Challenges and Future Plans
Today, SIS faces some problems. There is less money from the government. Some people want to control what it teaches. But the world needs SIS more than ever. Big issues like climate change and new technology need experts. SIS wants to keep studying different parts of the world. It will mix book learning with real work. The school also wants to share Indian ideas about world matters with other countries. The View From India Looking at World Affairs from the Indian perspective.
