India ranks 131st out of 148 countries in the Global Gender Gap Report 2025. This is a drop from 129th place last year. The report shows India has closed only 64.1% of its gender gap so far.
World still far from equal pay
The world has closed only 68.8% of the gender gap. At the current speed, it will take 123 years to reach full pay equality. In the EU, women earned 12% less per hour than men in 2023. In the US, women made about 85 cents for each dollar men made in 2024. The gap is smaller for younger workers but grows with age.
India lags in economic participation
India has high parity in education, but economic participation remains low at 40.7%. Women earn less and are not in many leadership roles. This affects savings, pensions, and financial freedom. The pay gap is not just a personal problem. It affects families, communities, and the whole economy. Equal pay could increase global GDP by trillions of dollars.
