Private Kindergarten Costs 22 Times Higher Than Government Schools

A new government survey shows that private kindergarten education in India costs much more than government schools. The cost gap is biggest at the pre-primary level, with private schools costing 22 times more than government schools in rural areas.

A new government survey shows that private kindergarten education in India costs much more than government schools. The cost gap is biggest at the pre-primary level, with private schools costing 22 times more than government schools in rural areas.

Big Cost Differences Across School Levels

The survey looked at school costs in 2025. In rural areas, private kindergarten costs 17,988 rupees per year. This is 22 times more than government pre-primary schools at 823 rupees. The cost gap gets smaller for higher classes. For primary school, private costs 11 times more. For middle school, it is 9.5 times more. The gap is smallest for higher secondary, where private is 4.6 times costlier.

State Differences and Urban Areas

Some states have even bigger gaps. In urban Karnataka, private kindergarten costs 72 times more than government schools. This is the biggest gap in urban India. Other states with big gaps are Odisha, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Gujarat. The survey also looked at urban areas. There, private kindergarten costs 26,188 rupees per year on average. This is 16 times more than government pre-primary schools at 1,630 rupees. Like in rural areas, the gap gets smaller for higher classes in cities too.
