Two boys, aged 9 and 13, drowned in the Haiderpur canal in northwest Delhi on Sunday evening. The children were swept away by strong currents while swimming, according to initial police reports.
Details of the Incident
The victims were Aniket Kumar, 9, and Krishan Kumar, 13. They were neighbors. The boys went to the canal around 4 pm when their fathers were at work. Locals saw them enter the water to swim. Soon, they struggled against the strong flow and went underwater. Their families could not find them in the evening and told the police between 9 pm and 10 pm. Searchers found the bodies at night. Doctors at BJRM Hospital said the boys were dead.
Police Investigation and Recent Drownings
Deputy Commissioner of Police Bhisham Singh said the deaths seem accidental. A post-mortem will be done. Both boys had lost their mothers earlier. Relatives said the families had warned the boys not to go to the canal alone. This incident is part of recent drownings in Delhi. Last week, a 14-year-old boy drowned in Yamuna floodwaters in Shastri Park. Two days before, a 45-year-old milkman was swept away in Garhi Medu village while trying to save his cow.
The deaths appear accidental. A post-mortem will be conducted, and further investigation is underway.
