Delhi, 9 Sep 2025

The Yamuna river water level in Delhi reached 204.96 metres on Tuesday morning. It is getting close to the warning mark of 204.50 metres at the Old Railway Bridge.

River level going down slowly

The water level has been going down since it reached 207.48 metres last Thursday. This was the highest point this season. As the water goes down, people are cleaning mud from their homes that were flooded. The river crossed the danger level last Tuesday. This led to the closing of the Old Railway Bridge. The bridge opened for traffic on Monday night when the water went below the danger mark.

Help for affected people

Tents have been set up to help people who had to leave their homes near the river. These tents are on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, near Mori Gate and in Mayur Vihar. Areas like Monastery Market, Madanpur Khadar, and Yamuna Bazar were flooded. People from these areas moved to relief camps. Last year, Delhi faced a big flood. More than 25,000 people had to leave their homes. The Yamuna reached its highest ever level of 208.66 metres on July 13, 2023. The water level of the Yamuna at Delhi’s Old Railway Bridge was recorded at 204.96 metres at 6 am on Tuesday, and was inching towards the warning mark of 204.50 metres, officials said. The water level has been declining after touching the season's…

Delhi, 9 Sep 2025

Delhi faced very high heat index levels this monsoon season. This caused a big increase in power demand. The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) shared this information on Monday.

High Humidity Leads to Uncomfortable Heat

The heat index went up a lot during June to August. It crossed 46 to 50 degrees Celsius. This made people feel very hot even though the actual temperature was not that high. The city used a lot of electricity during this time. CSE found that 67% of the daily peak power demand was because of the heat index and need for cooling. The nights were also very warm and humid. This made people use more cooling devices like fans and ACs.

Power Demand Reaches New Heights

Delhi used more electricity than ever before. On August 8, the city needed 7,050 MW of power. This was the highest ever for one day. In the whole month, Delhi almost reached its all-time high power use from 2024. The city used more than 8,400 MW of power. This is close to the record of 8,656 MW set last year. The CSE report says this is happening because of warmer nights, less green spaces, and more concrete buildings that trap heat.

Delhi has hit the second highest peak demand for electricity after 2024 summer

The CSE suggests using heat index data for power planning and making buildings that use less energy. Follow The Rising News for more verified updates.

The Supreme Court refused to hear Medha Patkar's plea in a 25-year-old defamation case against Delhi LG Vinai Kumar Saxena. The court allowed Patkar to withdraw her appeal seeking to examine an extra witness in the case.

New Delhi, 9 Sep 2025

The Supreme Court refused to hear Medha Patkar's plea in a 25-year-old defamation case against Delhi LG Vinai Kumar Saxena. The court allowed Patkar to withdraw her appeal seeking to examine an extra witness in the case.

Court Urges Closure of Long-Running Case

The Supreme Court bench asked both sides to end the case. The judges said they already closed it on merits. They told the lawyers to move on. Patkar's lawyer worried Saxena might file a new case if this one ends. The court first noted Saxena's promise not to file more cases. But Saxena's lawyer said he needed to keep his legal options open.

Background of the Defamation Case

The case began in 2000 when Patkar filed it against Saxena over a newspaper article. Last month, the Supreme Court upheld Patkar's conviction in a 2001 defamation case filed by Saxena. That case was about a press release by Patkar's group. It said Saxena gave them a cheque that bounced. The Delhi High Court agreed Patkar's statements hurt Saxena's image. The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea by social activist Medha Patkar seeking permission to examine an additional witness in a 25-year-old defamation case against Delhi lieutenant governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. The court allowed her to withdraw the appeal. Patkar had approached the top court against the Delhi High Court’s July 29 order, which upheld a trial court decision rejecting her…

Move on. Why do you want to carry this case? We have already closed this case on merits.
